Antique Victorian Folding Pair of Lorgnette Spectacles Enamel Sapphire Diamond Ruby 14K

Found is this delightfully ornate lorgnette from Shreve, Crump & Low Co. 1869-1887 Boston (assumed as the box looks original). Your gift-giving woes are over for the person who has everything and appreciates culture and antique jewelry.

First a little history: A lorgnette (/lÉ”ËËˆnjÉ›t/) is a pair of spectacles with a handle, used to hold them in place, rather than fitting over the ears or nose. The word lorgnette is derived from the French lorgner, to take a sidelong look at, and Middle French, from lorgne, squinting. The lorgnette was usually used as a piece of jewelry, rather than to enhance vision. (These glass lenses are for farsighted/magnifying. Ask an optometrist for options if you wish to change as there are screws holding the lenses in the frame). Fashionable ladies usually preferred them to spectacles. These were very popular at masquerade parties and used often at the opera. They were worn popularly in the 19th century.

These are in good working order although the lenses are lightly scratched but it doesn't effect their use. They are handmade in 14K yellow gold with beautiful beads and scrolls enclosing cream enamel. There are approximately 1ct. of blue sapphire cabochon, 6 round cabochon rubies approximately .48cts total, and 9 old European cut diamonds around .68cts total, H-I Color, SI Clarity. The total wt. is approximately 2.16cts. The piece weighs 38.70 grams and is 5.25" long x 1.25" wide with the spectacles inside. (No chain comes with it but comes with a nice wide bale that will accommodate a wide variety.) Questions are welcome on Pendant 3027.
